Fake United States Paper Currency Denominations


Fake United States Paper Currency Denominations have been used as both jokes and as a real attempt of counterfeiting. Counterfeiting was common back in the 1800s until the National Banking Act in 1863 was passed. This is because until then banks were allowed to print their own currency so there were no questions asked if a bill was legitimate or not.

The $3 bill has been released more as a practical joke to poke fun at celebrities like Bill and Hillary Clinton, Michael Jackson, and Richard Nixon. There is a saying that goes with this, "Queer as a three dollar bill."

There was a $22 bill made by Lawrence Wagner (a.k.a. Love 22) who was a U.S. Presidential Candidate. He printed the bill because being a numerologist he believed that the number 22 was very important. The Federal Government indicted him for the crime of counterfeiting, but he was let go because technically you can not counterfeit something that doesn't exist.

In 2001 and 2003 there were two occasions where a $200 bill was used to pay for items. The one bill had a picture of President George W. Bush on the front of it.

A $1,000,000 bill does not exist now and has never existed, so the U.S. Federal Reserve allows it to be printed as a novelty. There have been times when someone has tried to deposit the bill into a bank account or use it for purchasing something.

Ray Comfort, a Christian evangelist, has a ministry called Living Waters Publications which produces fake $1,000,000 bills and fake $1,000,000,000 bills. The $1,000,000 has Rutherford B. Hayes, the 19th U.S. President, on the front of it and the $1,000,000,000 pictures the 19th British evangelist Charles Spurgeon. Both notes have gospel messages on the back of them.

Government's Fuzzy Math is Misleading Us


We've been told that the more the government spends, the better off we'll be. Instead of dealing in concrete numbers, we hear about how many jobs were saved while the unemployment count goes up. And, my favorite one is that a company is too big to fail, which was pushed by the former as well as the present administration.

Pre-boomers, like me, studied math from the time we started school, known back then as grammar school not elementary school. After years of learning, we know there's no need for advanced trigonometry or differential calculus to run a column of numbers, figure percentages or balance our own household budgets. Then how come the big corporations refuse to get it right and those in Washington can't get it right?

A family that spends more than it makes goes broke and loses the house, the car, everything. The only way they can get out of the financial hole is to stop unnecessary spending before it's too late. Plus, they do things like work overtime, take an extra job, and make arrangements with creditors to restructure loans and payment plans. What they don't do is use high-interest credit cards to rack up more debt, which is exactly what the government is doing with the bailouts, unbridled spending, and at the same time trying to tackle every social woe known to America.

The only place where unemployment is at the favorable 5 percent level, while many areas are experiencing 10 percent problems plus underemployment on top of that, is, you guessed it, Washington, DC. Yeah, what we need is more people to administer the spending plans. Maybe some of them will be able to tell us where the money is going, how it's being spent, and what results were achieved. If these new federal jobs don't provide this information what are the people being hired to do, because we all know the government does not produce anything. Nothing that will add to the Gross National Product, employ people in the rest of the country (oh, I forgot, positions are now being filled to take the census next year and it will be conducted nationwide), or bring in tax revenue from businesses and the workforce to pay for the spending. This means higher taxes for all of us, not just the rich; or the government will have to print more and more money as well as pay higher interest on the funds it borrows, which leads to inflation.

This brings me to the third point: the notion that a company is too big to fail. It's pure nonsense. Could it be that primary reason for failure is because they are too big in the first place? Quite possibly, the management has lost touch with what the business is all about, with the employees, and above all with the consumer. The way to fix this is to scale down, cut back, and reorganize - much in the same way the average American family would have to do it.

And this is exactly what our government must do too. Or, we're going to leave a terrible - almost insurmountable - financial mess for our children and grandchildren. If you disagree, just do the math.

Fibonaccial Trading Techniques For Forex


Fibonacci was the great mathematician from Italy. He founded the new sequence of numbers and it was named after him called as fibonacci. The 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233, 377,610 etc are the numbers of this sequence which has the starting of 0 and 1. Each number in this sequence is the sum of the preceding two numbers.

On going to the higher sequence of the Fibonacci numbers, the closer two consecutive numbers which when divided get the answer of the golden ratio. On applying these ratio's to the trading stocks, thus results are produced as primary and secondary. One direction result indicates the primary result and the opposite direction refers to the secondary result.

In primary trend,the most common Fibonacci retracement levels are 38.2%,50%,61.8%.These standard levels are used by most basic stock charting applications.These Fibonacci retracement levels act almost as magnets once the countertrend rally takes place.Apart from above three there are few other levels that can provide resistance.These are 75%, 78.6%, 87.5%, and 88.7% retracement levels.

The thumb rule mentions that the retracement levels show about 50%, and the previously mentioned levels attracts the price by behaving like magnets. The price must be said by the persons who are familiar on those levels. Always the prices do not remain in the steady state. Lanzarote - A Compelling Paradise


As the plane makes its descent into Arrecife the first thing you notice out of the window is crater upon crater, historically established into a dry, orange landscape. Dotted around the island you see clusters of white speckles - buildings that make up the small villages and towns. Surrounding the island is the vast blue Atlantic Ocean, foaming white as it crashes against the volcanic shores of Lanzarote.

As the plane comes in for its final descent, look left and you see the beaches of Los Piccolos and Matagorda, before the final touchdown onto the Arrecife airport runway. No matter if there are clouds in the sky the first thing that hits you when you get off the plane is the heat.

After you sort out your luggage and jump on your bus, or in your car, the roads seem sparse. Even the main dual carriage ways are quiet compared to the madness of the UK roads. The locals are relatively forgiving and the small number of cars on the roads makes it a very reassuring starting point.

The way of life is reasonably down to earth and 'grass roots' and yet the initiatives of things such as generating power from the 'trade winds' and sheltering crops from these winds using small semi-circled walls is true form of genius.

Of course, Lanzarote wouldn't be Lanzarote without the weather. The year round sunshine and warm climate is mainly thanks to the location of the island, just a throw over from the African coast and the Sahara desert. At times the heat can, maybe, be a little overwhelming, but a breeze that blows most of the year helps to keep things a little more comfortable.

Change the System, Stupid (Part 3 of 3)


After reading the preceding two parts of this trilogy, we understand that we must treat causes not symptoms (Part 1) and that it is the system, not people or parts that must be changed (Part 2). In this third, final article, we answer the question: What can and should we do?

One of the most common excuses people use is: They will never let me do it [even when people do not know what "it" is]. The all-powerful, never-named "they" loosely refers to people with big salaries and fancy titles, generally with elected or appointed high office, in other words, "they" are people with the power of position. In the USA, the real power rests with the people - you and me. As long as that power rests quiescent, as long as we do not use it, then we get what "they" decide. Time to change that.

CHANGE, OR MORE-OF-THE-SAME

The first step is, as they say, always the hardest. It must happen in our minds. We need to Stop 3, and Start 3.

STOP 3

• Stop blaming: it serves as an excuse to avoid own responsibility to act and worse, blaming cures nothing.

• Stop confusing symptoms for causes and the meanings of words. To cure anything, we must treat causes not just symptoms. To avoid communication errors by being clear and in agreement on the meanings and implications of words like cost and market-driven.

• Stop expecting (and waiting for) a silver bullet or magic potion. The Lone Ranger and Harry Potter may have them, but in our world, simple, quick, easy effective answers to big, complex problems do not exist.

START 3

• Start believing. Healthcare is fixable. We can have both cheaper and better. The person who can and must cure healthcare is you (and me and everyone else).

• Start creating a consensus. We need general agreement - a consensus - on what is truly wrong with healthcare and what we want any new system to do.

• Start demanding leadership for change, but not just any change. We want a new system that will produce the outcomes we want, built along guidelines we establish.

CHANGE THE SYSTEM. (REPLACE IT.)

If a system is broken, you fix it. If it - our current medical malprocess - cannot be fixed,, then we must replace it with a new process, one that works. Adjustments in healthcare financing viz., universal health insurance; tweaking the medical malpractice system, viz., caps on awards; or big bold resolutions like the Patient's Bill of Rights: these will not cure healthcare. We can do without the rousing slogans and great sound bytes. We do not need more grandiose but ultimately ineffectice promises. We need an medical process that: maintains and when necessary restores our good health; helps us when we are injured; and keeps learning continuously so that the care we receive can keep getting better.

DEMAND LEADERSHIP FOR CHANGE

Creating a new healthcare system will require the power of the People. We have to be willing to accept change both in our system and in our selves. To start this process, we need to break through the logjam created by partisanship and election cycles, and circumvent the influence of the special interests. We need to achieve a consensus on what is wrong and on what we want. To do all this requires a national dialogue on healthcare: us talking to us. We certainly want to include medical leaders and practitioners, managers, legislators, economists, experts of all sorts, but ultimately we must decide.

We require the government to begin a process of general education and discussion: talk shows; town hall meetings; televised debates; pro & con articles in newspapers and magazines: all focused on what is really wrong with healthcare (the causes) and what we want any system to accomplish. At the end of a two-year dialogue, there will be a referendum on healthcare with our entire populace voting on ten key questions. Our answers will create guidelines for the creation of a new, effective medical (bene, no longer mal) process, to be implemented no later than four years after the referendum.

We can learn from various sources: business experience; management expertise; successes and failures in healthcare in other countries. What we cannot do is take any single answer, technique or even philosophy, impose it unmodified on our system and expect nirvana. The only answer that will work for us is one that we create.

Learning from our experience in healthcare, the Public should make a second, even more basic demand of our legislators, regulators, and those with authority over large numbers of people: all decision-makers must have evidence (proof of effect) before making a decision that affects us all, as well as feedback of consequences (with teeth) to those who make these decisions. When you personally waste money, you suffer the consequences. When our Representatives waste millions on a bridge to nowhere or billions on HIPAA, there seems to be no consequence to them (just on us who have to pay the bills). All decision-making should have evidence and feedback.

Can Green Jobs Save the US Economy?


Save is a big word. Let's talk about it.

Have you got a better idea? Of course everyone does...usually somewhat tied to their own needs or situation of course.

As "Solar People", to answer affirmative in this space on the surface would be no different. But lets see if we can't line up a few reason that make sense. If they do, you can then use the list to compare to your solution(s) right?

1. Bought any gas lately? - Now I am not saying that putting solar on your roof or in your parking or on your farm is going to lower the price for gas at the pump. But the price at the pump ought to be getting your attention and making you think about the broader implications. It's an energy issue.

Especially in the United States where distribution for most products we depend on are delivered over a vast but energy inefficient network of highways and gas guzzling trucking network....it affects everything. But it takes some time to filter through. First the initial buyers of these delivered products fight price increases and to remain competitive, distribution companies will try to absorb these increases in the hopes that it will be a short term spike. Once it extends beyond a couple of months large increases in transportation costs cannot be absorbed and end up being extended upstream until it reaches the retail (your pocket), level. If this is true, based on recent prices, you can expect to see almost everything you buy start to go up all at once. This on top of you increased fuel bill.

The facts are, we use more energy at all levels than we produce which leaves us open to market and political forces we cannot control. We believe sound economic, political and security policies are greatly enhanced the more the US can move towards energy independence. I mean who can argue with that?

The last time we experienced circumstances similar to this was in the 1980's. Remember the gas lines? Remember the inflation - home mortgages at 17% and more? Are we at the beginning of that right now? I believe we are.

2. Extremely High Unemployment - will installing solar on your home and/or business help combat unemployment? Well of course it will. Before we speak to that, I hope you know that the numbers you hear about unemployment rates in the US on your evening news are no way near accurate. Over time, the government and others in the financial arena, (Federal Reserve?), have stripped out whole groups of people. If you have been unemployed over a year, or you are over a certain age...and a whole bunch of other exceptions, you aren't being counted anymore. Every honest number I have seen has real unemployment between 20% to 25%...NOT the 9% or 10% we hear all the time. The height of unemployment during the Great Depression was about 25%. Just do a quick check of who you know in your life...

In all solar installations, solar design expertise is required which is attainable only after considerable study and effort. The education arena to support these new fields adds jobs. Many of the components used in American installations are American made in newer manufacturing companies around the US. The actual installation of these systems leverage similar skill sets readily available with the commercial and residential construction "collapse" which started in 2007 and spun out of control in 2008...and has not even made an honest dent in trying to come back. Much of the final effort in these installations are only finished by licensed electricians bringing similar work to them as well.

The implementation of these new "distributed energy" systems opened up opportunities in new IT technology in both software and hardware to integrate the energy and it's information back into the "grid" and the fabric of our lives. Which leads to....

3. Large Scale, National Energy Infrastructure Problems - we are right at the edge of serious issues with fluent, uninterrupted energy delivery. In densely populated areas like the Northeast and Southwest, brown outs and other energy interruptions have become all to regular of an occurrence. EVERY single bit of information confirms that this is just the beginning.

For a few years, I traveled to India on business. Even in the more modern areas, energy disruption was an accepted fact. If you were running a business that needed reliable power - you ALWAYS had huge automatic back up generators - (usually loud smelly diesel machines). Power was on and off in brand new sparkling office buildings. They have much less of that today - we are headed where they have been - and they where we have been...how are we supposed to compete with that?

Auto-Enrolment - A Cloud on the Horizon for Small Businesses


The UK currently has a pensions crisis caused by an aging population, longer life expectancy, inadequate saving for retirement and decreased pension fund values following a period of unprecedented financial instability. The UK governments 2008 Pensions Act outlined the Workplace Pension Reforms intended to increase the number of people saving adequately for retirement.

The key feature of the reforms is the requirement that all employers must automatically enrol their employees in to a workplace pension scheme. The phasing in of auto-enrolment will begin in 2012 with businesses employing more than 30,000 people, then those with more than 350 staff in 2013 and finally those with less than 350 staff from 2014. The date when a business must begin auto-enrolment will be determined by the last two digits of the PAYE reference code.

Auto-enrolment will be mandatory for staff over 22 years of age who earn in excess of £5,035 per annum no matter how long they have been employed. Those aged between 16 and 22 and earning less than £5,035 can request that their employer enrols them. All employees have the option to opt out of auto-enrolment if they wish but must then be re-enrolled every 3 years.

The National Employment Savings Trust (NEST) is the Governments own defined contribution pension scheme and will be the default pension scheme for employers who do not provide an alternative scheme meeting minimum requirements set out in the legislation.

In the long run minimum contributions will be set at 8% of qualifying earnings between £5,035 and £33,500 of which 3% must be from the employer. This level of contributions will be phased in starting at 2% in 2012, rising to 5% in 2016 and then 8% from 2017.

In June 2010 the newly elected UK coalition Government ordered a review of how to support the auto-enrolment process. The terms of reference of the review suggest amendments will be made to the 2008 Pensions Act following a downturn in the economic outlook. The minimum earnings level for auto-enrolment may be increased, the age for enrolment may be increased,a minimum number of employees for enrolment may be introduced,a minimum length of service is likely as is the use of basic earnings to determine contributions instead of qualified earnings. However, the magnitude of the pensions crisis and the scale of the UK Governments budget deficit dictate that concessions are likely to be modest at best.

Approximately 40% of the UK's economic output is produced by small firms meaning the Government will put their role in addressing the crisis at the heart of its reforms. Currently, cost and administrative burden mean small businesses are unlikely to offer a pension scheme to employees and when auto-enrolment finally forces them to do so many will need advice and support. The complexity of setting up then running a pension scheme is considerable and small firms with modest human and financial resources will almost certainly need some assistance from either a public or private entity. The Governments budgetary predicament means it is unlikely that significant public assistance will be provided aside from making the NEST scheme relatively straightforward. Small businesses will most likely seek assistance from their accountant to help with the auto-enrolment process. The benefits of being able to avoid the day to day administration of a pension scheme will outweigh the extra accountancy costs. An accountant will have the skills and experience to set up and administer a scheme considerably quicker and to a higher degree of accuracy than most small businesses.

Outsourcing pension scheme administration will reduce legal risks associated with running a scheme and ensure accurate contributions are made. Payroll processing is often done in house by small firms and will need modification to accommodate deductions of pensions contributions. Tour of London's Art Galleries


London has some of the finest art galleries in the world, with something for all tastes provided by a diverse selection of fine galleries, most of them with free entry. Here's a quick guide to the city for art lovers.

Though it's recently been rather overshadowed by the showier Tate Modern, Tate Britain (named after William Tate, the sugar magnate, who founded it) beside the Thames at Milbank, is still the biggest hitter in the London art world, with a fantastic permanent collection. It's particularly good for Turner and Blake, each of whom have a gallery to themselves, but there are also plenty more top international names, including modern British artists such as Tracey Emin, Francis Bacon and John Latham. Tate Britain is well-known for its temporary shows, the most notorious being the annual Turner Prize exhibition, which displays the work by four young artists and can be guaranteed to baffle and infuriate the public. Every three years a guest curator produces an overview on the current British art scene, which is always intriguing.

Tate Modern, just down the river from Tate Britain at Bankside, opened in 2000, and has been a great success, acclaimed both as a strikingly bold building - its origins as a power station are still obvious in the hulking brick structure - and for its imaginative exhibitions. The permanent display is divided thematically, and includes most of the big names of the twentieth century, including Monet, Rothko, Matisse and Picasso among many others. There are also temporary shows and there's always a specially commissioned piece in the Turbine Hall; it's fascinating to see how artists have responded to this gigantic space.

Note that both Tates, like all public galleries, have free entry (though temporary exhibitions are charged), and that there's a very handy boat ('Tate to Tate') that runs along the Thames between the two Tates, allowing you to visit both galleries in a day.

At the heart of London in Trafalgar Square, with its domed portico facing Nelson's Column, the National Gallery has to be the best located of Britain's art museums. Its collection, housed in a magnificent set of old-fashioned galleries and the bright new Sainsbury's Wing, ranges from the mid-13th century to around 1900, the Renaissance to Post-impressionism, with most visitor's highlights being Leonardo da Vinci's Virgin of the Rocks and Van Gogh's Sunflowers. There is also a noted collection of Impressionist masterpieces.

A number of smaller venues have excellent temporary exhibitions, generally of living artists. The Whitechapel gallery is in the east end, a long way from the standard tourist sites (though close to Aldgate East tube station). The Serpentine is small, but very well situated in Hyde Park. Both are free.

Larger temporary exhibitions can be seen at the The Royal Academy of Arts in Burlington House in Piccadilly. It was founded in 1768 with a remit to encourage British art, and it holds important temporary exhibitions - though note that it's not cheap at around ten pounds a ticket. Every summer, from May to August, it hosts an open exhibition - anyone can enter. The selected work is variable, and often rather conservative, but it's always worth checking out.

Finally, the Hayward Gallery, in the South Bank arts center, has three or four shows a year, generally surveys of trends in modern art, designed to complement the building's rather brutalist concrete architecture. Entry is around eight pounds.

Bridging the Gap Between Pharmacy Drug Dictionaries and Barcode Scanning


A source of frustration for the nursing staff is when the bedside scanning system cannot identify the medication from the data in the medication's barcode. Inaccurate error messages lead to "work-arounds" which put patients at risk. The issue is that not all medication barcodes are created equal. They may contain more information than just the FDA's 10-digit NDC number, such as lot numbers, expiration dates and other manufacture data. This information can change regularly.

In order for accurate bedside scanning to take place, drug dictionaries must be built and properly maintained to correctly identify medications in the bedside scanning system. NDC Translator is the bridge between the barcode scanner and the bedside scanning system. It will save you hundreds of hours setting up and maintaining your hospital's drug dictionary.

For a medication to be correctly identified during the bedside scanning process, the "ever-changing data" in the barcode must always be entered into the bedside scanning system. History behind NDC numbers

The National Drug Code (NDC Number), is a unique 10-digit identification number, assigned by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), to all prescription medications. This number is the only mandated component of the medication's linear barcode.

NDC numbers are comprised of three parts;
4 or 5 digit manufacturer identification number
3 or 4 digit product ID made by the manufacturer
1 or 2 digit product container size code

For example:
Plavix FDA issued NDC number: 63653-1171-1
1171 = Plavix 75mg product ID
1 = container size code

Because of the variations that can exist in each part of the NDC number, three possible 10 digit number sequences are produced.

12345 -123 -12
12345 -1234 -1

The variations in formatting came about because the FDA ran out of four digit manufacturers ID numbers. To maintain the original 10 digit length, the FDA lets the manufacturer choose to shorten the product ID or container size code by one character. The health care industry has standardized to the 5-4-2 format by adding a zero into the part of the 10 digit NDC that does not match a full 5-4-2 sequence. To demonstrate this point, below is what the new sequences look like:

Tyler Perry - Everything You Need To Know


Tyler Perry is one of America's most successful filmmakers. He is an actor, director, screenwriter, and producer. He started his career with theater and rose to become a national figure with his first movie "Dairy of a Mad Black Woman" in 2005.

Perry was born to Emmitt Perry and Willie Maxine Perry on 13th September 1969 as Emmitt Perry Jr. When he was 16 years old he legally changed his name to Tyler Perry in an attempt to distance himself from his father who used to abuse him and his mother. Inspired by one of Oprah Winfrey's show Perry began to write about his thoughts and feelings in the form of letters to himself. This was a like therapy to enable him to deal with his childhood trauma. This also inspired him to purse a career in writing.

These letters were then made into musical called "I Know I've Been Changed" and he wanted to stage. He took all his savings and moved into Atlanta and staged the play but it was a financial disaster. But he still wanted to make it big and for six long years he tried re-writing the same, and finally in 1998 his musical was bought by a promoter to be staged in a church-turned theater, and this time it was a hit. Later it was bought by prestigious Fox Theatre and the musical became a huge success. He went on to write many more plays thereafter which were all hits.

Thereafter he tried his hands in films and he was an instant hit with his first movie released in 2005, which grossed $22 million and was number one on charts nationwide. All movies of his are coproduced and distributed by Lionsgate Entertainment. Till 2010, Perry's films were mostly shown in North America with limited release outside.

He also published his first book "Don't Make a Black Woman Take off Her Earrings: Madea's Uninhibited Commentaries On Life And Love" in 2006 which also was a bestseller. He was awarded Quill Book Awards for "Humour" and "Book of the Year".

He also made a mark with television for the first time in 2006 by producing "Tyler Perry's House of Payne". After its pilot run of 10 shows he signed the contract worth of $200 million for 100 shows with TBS.

Another unique quality to all his creativity is that most of them are based on a central character called "Mabel 'Madea' Simmons". It is said that this character is based on one of his aunt and his mother. His stories are based on the African-Americans and his stories always reflect closer to life themes and with lot of humor which endears him to his audiences.

WWF's Living Planet Report 2006


In October 2006, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) released its annual 'Living Planet Report' - detailing the global impact on natural resources and the declining numbers of animal species that are dependent upon them. It also offered solutions on how to reverse the downward trends in these areas. This year's report also explores the impact of human activity on the planet and concludes that the world's natural ecosystems are being run down at a rate never seen before in human history.

The 'Living Planet Report' makes the terrifying inference that the world's population of vertebrate species have declined by a third since 1970, thus confirming the worst of human fears: that humanity is using up the planet's resources at a much faster rate than which they can be produced. Carter S. Roberts, President and CEO of the WWF, commented:

"The bottom line of this report could not be more clear - for twenty years we've lived our lives in a way that far exceeds the carrying capacity of the Earth. The choices we make today will shape the possibilities for the generations which follow us. The fact that we live beyond our means in our use of natural resources will surely limit opportunities for future generations to follow."

In fact, the USA, as the world's foremost consumer society, is seen to be at the forefront of what the WWF report calls 'resource overshoot' - the use of more resources than is sustainable by the planet. This makes it all the more important for institutions in the USA - including the government, parents and teachers - to teach our children (the "future generations" that Roberts talks about) with such concern of exactly how harmful human behaviour can be to the planet.

In an attempt to try to educate children, there has, to date been a variety of efforts made by different sources on how best to preserve the environment for future life. For example, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) runs a children's educational resource called TUNZA, which aims to work in partnership with children across the world in order to equip them with the tools needed to maintain the environment for their own children in turn.

With environmental and wildlife awareness having become so much more prevalent in popular culture during the last ten years - through sources as wide ranging as The Body Shop's 1990s product packaging, through to Al Gore's recent movie 'An Inconvenient Truth' - many larger organisations that are not traditionally associated with education have jumped on board. For instance, Doubletree hotels runs a program called 'Teaching Kids to CARE®' - a special educational initiative that aims to bring wildlife and environmental awareness to the forefront of the classroom.

With the continued initiation of this and other, similar programs both in America and across the world, there is the possibility that such programs will enable a reversal of the downward trend of environmental damage; perhaps allowing for the WWF's Living Planet Report to predict a much more promising future for the world in future years.

CDC Study on Birth Defects Implicates Popular Fertility Drug


On November 26, 2010, the medical journal, Human Reproduction, published online the results of a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which found that the fertility drug, Clomid (clomiphene citrate), was associated with a significant increased risk for 9 different types of birth defects following use of the popular drug.

The implicated abnormalities included a 130% increased risk for anencephaly (open cranium with absence of a brain); a 130% increased risk for esophageal atresia (closed esophagus); a 120% increased risk for omphalocele (protrusion of part of the intestine through the abdominal wall); a 90% increased risk for craniosynostosis (premature fusion of the skull bones); increased risks for 3 different types of heart defects, ranging between 60% and 390%; and an increased risk of 340% for a defect of the brain (Dandy Walker malformation). The ninth defect (cloacal exstrophy) involves multiple defects of the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts, and the study reported a 440% increased risk for this severe congenital abnormality.

Drawing on 8 years of data from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study, CDC epidemiologist Dr. Jennita Reefhuis and her colleagues compared the drug's exposure to 36 types of birth defects with 6,500 live born babies born without major birth anomalies, used as controls. No less than 22 of the remaining 27 birth defect categories likewise showed an increased risk, ranging from 10% up to 170% after exposure to Clomid, although the numbers were insufficient to reach the scientific standard for "statistical significance."

The FDA is now faced with a dilemma which will be more difficult to side-step. The agency had previously ignored preliminary findings from the CDC study, which reported in July 2008 that exposure to Clomid was associated with an increased risk of developing 4 different types of birth defects - a list that has now grown to nine. The purported justification for challenging these findings was that they had not yet been reported in a journal.

But earlier studies appearing in peer-reviewed journals involving the same drug have likewise been ignored. These include reports of an increased risk of craniosynostosis in 2003 (Reefhuis, et al.); an increased risk of neural tube defects in 2004 (Medveczky, et al.); an increased risk of penoscrotal hypospadias in 2006 (Meijer, et al.); an increased risk of spina bifida in 2006 (Wu, et al.); and an increased risk of neural tube defects when ovarian cysts are produced by the drug, in 2008 (Banhidy, et al.). Since anencephaly (involving the cranium) and spina bifida (involving the spine) are both neural tube defects (NTDs), there are now 4 studies involving an association between Clomid and NTDs published in the last 6 years - none of which have motivated the FDA to require a warning.

In December 2007, a citizen petition was filed with the FDA demanding, among other things, that the regulatory agency require the manufacturers of Clomid and its generic to include a birth defect warning in the drugs' labeling. After sitting on the petition for a year and 9 months, the FDA denied the request. However, in October 2009, a petition for reconsideration was filed, citing multiple errors in the reasoning of the FDA's ruling. Fourteen more months have now passed without a final decision - a delay which has provided a window of opportunity for presentation of the recent findings by the CDC.

Will the FDA also ignore an official study by another branch of the federal government? After 43 years on the market, will the users of this popular fertility drug finally be warned about the potential risks to the babies they so desperately desire? Stay tuned, as this saga continues to unfold. For anyone interested in the debated exchanges over the citizen petition, I would encourage you to go to http://www.regulations.gov and enter the docket number of FDA-2007-P-0234. In addition to a debate over the science on the issue, these filings reflect an agency determined to maintain the status quo, rather than acquiesce to the mandate of federal law to require warnings of potential serious adverse reactions to drugs.

Time will tell whether the FDA is committed to protecting the general public or, instead, the interests of the industry it is required to regulate.

How To Spend $9 Trillion Over 10 Years


In the year 2001, the national debt stood at $5.8 trillion. Today that figure has more than doubled to $14.3 trillion. This $9 trillion increase over the past ten years can be attributed to government expenses, particularly with the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts, additional interest costs, and also the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Why is it then that we constantly hear politicians and Wall Street bankers going after Social Security payments as a key way to balance the the debt? Compared to the aforementioned expenses, Social Security hardly factors into the $9 trillion in question. Out of the top three contributors to the increase in debt, the only item being discussed, albeit rather quietly, is taxes. The 2008 financial industry bailout added an additional $200 million, although the Federal Reserve partook in a shadow bailout of its own totaling over $2.8 trillion on their balance sheets.

The fact of the matter is that both political parties have set up a system where money is filtered to the top one percent, while the middle class wilts on a vine. This new economic system distributes wealth by political will, while backstage of this farcical theatre the working class is being forced into debt serfdom, finding it virtually impossible to buy a home or even get an education without racking up onerous amounts of debt in loans.

The velocity at which the national debt has grown in this country is stunning. When comparing annual changes in GDP and government debt over the past 50 years, the rate at which our debt is growing has far surpassed our growth in GDP. This is clearly not a good thing; as a country you do not want to accumulate debt faster than your economy can develop and compensate for this number. For the most part, during the 1980's or the era of "deficits don't matter," is when we really notice this change. This trend has continued through the years, with little of the $9 trillion having trickled back down into the hands of the middle and working class. The only group seeing solid income growth is at the top and much of their growth is secured by government favoritism and welfare for the rich.

Not convinced? In this new kind of system we live in, hedge fund managers pay taxes at a much lower rate than your typical construction worker. Additionally, one out of three Americans have no savings to their name, so financially they have nothing to protect. A majority of the population has bought into the notion that political parties are out to help them, but the current distribution of wealth alone should be enough to shatter this idea.

Tax breaks are of little use, especially since they tend to benefit only the extremely wealthy. Were this all free market based, it would be a different story. Bailed out companies now invest overseas and create jobs in other countries with U.S. taxpayer dollars while our economy suffers. Most Americans would rather have a healthy economy instead of seeing their tax rates fall and having an economy that is producing low wage capitalism jobs. We have spent so much in so many areas, all with no significant, positive impact on the middle class.

Libya is going to be the country with full of opportunities in different sectors. With an area of almost 1,800,000 square kilometers (694,984 sq mi), 90% of which is desert, Libya is the fourth largest country in Africa by area, and the 17th largest in the world. The 2009 estimated population of Libya is 6,420,000 which live on the remaining 10% of the area left which is other than desert [1].

The opportunity of producing solar energy is huge there in Libya as the 90% of the area is desert with no rain falls (once in a blue moon). The country fulfills the requirement of energy quite sufficiently but still there is a plan to develop wind and solar power to provide energy for remote places. Other than that the idea of transporting power from Libya to other countries which are lower in production and higher in demand is very much in the cards. Experts have calculated that each square kilometer of desert receives solar energy equivalent to 1.5 million barrels of oil every year which is enormous. To fulfill the requirement of solar energy in countries which are lower in production and higher in demand, Libya can really play its part. Yes this is costly but still the amount of energy that Libya would produce is good enough to bear that cost and wastage while supplying to other countries and the better precautionary measures can be taken to avoid this loss.

Taking the example of Sahara desert with less cloud cover and a better solar angle, one can obtain closer to 83 W/m². The unpopulated area of the Sahara desert is over 9 million km², which if covered with solar panels would provide 750 terawatts total. Libya has an area of 1,800,000 square kilometers and 90% of which is desert, which means 1,620,000 square kilometers is desert area. If this area covered with solar panels would come up with 135 terawatts in total which can be an immense achievement. There would be a need of big solar towers to construct and it will open up gates for construction companies as well.

The country has abandoned its nuclear weapons programme and now decided to invest in to the infrastructure and other developmental programmes. The lifting of UN sanctions is a real morale booster for Libya. Libya is eyeing to match Dubai and wants the country the hub of business but for that matter it has to evolve big time. For example there is no proper railway system; there are poorly maintained roads and shortages of houses. The business visitors prefer flying within the cities than using the roads. There is an urgent need to upgrade the Libyan airports, it has 13 airports and all of them need improvements. Same is the case with ports; all of them are underdeveloped and needs improvement.

A very interesting fact is that the population of Libya is growing by 3.5% annually which is considered to be one of the fastest in the world. Around 85 % of the population is urban and there is an urgent need for new homes, schools, and hospitals. The country's population is set to almost double to 10 million by 2025.This not only encourages the foreign investors to invest in the country but also creates a lot of job opportunities. The reason of global changes and of course the big one "removal of sanctions" from Libya's perspective is a bright sign for the construction industry to nurture. The Re establishment of private construction company that were close down in the mid 1970s is one plan the country is undertaking. This will create a huge boost in the industry and create a lot of job opportunities as there are not many local labors, technicians and other skilled people. A research states that around 500,000 housing units are planned for the next ten years. Their cost is expected to be more than 25 billion dollars and other than that the railroad project is in the pipe line too. Hotel industry is set to increase as well.

Water is very scarce which has given rise to the £20 billion, 25-year Great Man Made River project which is ongoing. Available water is predicted to drop to 330 cu meters by 2025 - down from over 4000 cu meters after the Italians left in the 1950 [2]. All an all it invites the construction opportunity as well, with all the problems construction opportunity, and elimination of unemployment is a bi product.

Libya has massive potential for a tourism boom. Straddling between the Middle East and Africa, and having lived under Italian colonial rule, Libya could also offer a rich cultural experience. However, years of international segregation and its delineation as a 'rogue' state - it was on the US list of 'state sponsors of terrorism means that it lacks both the infrastructure and the image. Now that Libya has stabilized relations with Washington and re-establish full diplomatic ties, things are set to change. According to a joint report released by consultancy group Monitor and Cambridge Energy Research Associates, Libya currently attracts a meagre 300,000 visitors annually, compared to its eastern neighbor Egypt's 8.5mn. The country has only around 120 hotels and only one, the Corinthia Group hotel that is not run by the state and is up to international standards. So it is a great opportunity not only for the local construction companies but foreign companies as well to come to Libya, as it is going to offer too many opportunities.

What Is Randomness?


The BBC Radio 4 programme 'In Our Time' looked at the topic of randomness today. The In Our Time website has a link to the programme on the iPlayer, if you missed it first time round.

What is meant by randomness? Well, a truly random event is not deterministic, i.e. it is not possible to determine the next outcome, based upon the previous outcomes, or on anything else.

In actual fact, random processes are very important in lots of areas of maths, science and life in general, but truly random processes are remarkably difficult to achieve. Why should this be the case? Because in theory, many processes that we consider to be random, such as rolling a dice, are in fact deterministic. You could, theoretically, determine the outcome of the dice roll if you knew its exact position, size, etc.

The ancient Greek philosopher and mathematician Democritus (ca. 460 BC - ca. 370 BC) was a member of the group known as Atomists. This group of ancients were the pioneers of the concept that all matter can be subdivided into its fundamental building blocks, atoms. Democritus decreed there was no such thing as true randomness. He gave the example of two men meeting at a well, both of whom consider their meeting to have been pure chance. What they did not know is that the meeting was probably pre-arranged by their families. This can be considered an analogy for the deterministic dice roll: there are factors determining the outcome, even if we cannot measure or control them precisely.

Epicurus (341 BC - 270 BC), a later Greek mathematician, disagreed. Although he had no idea how small atoms really were, he suggested they swerve randomly in their paths. No matter how well we understand the laws of motion, there will always be randomness introduced by this underlying property of atoms.

Aristotle worked further on probability, but it remained a non-mathematical pursuit. He divided all things into certain, probable and unknowable, for example writing about the outcome of throwing knuckle bones, early dice, as unknowable.

As with many other areas of mathematics, the topic of randomness and probability did not resurface in Europe until the Renaissance. The mathematician and gambler Gerolamo Cardano (24 September 1501 - 21 September 1576) correctly wrote down the probabilities of throwing a six with one dice, a double six with 2 dice, and a triple with three. He was the first person to notice, or at least to record, the fact that you're more likely to throw 7 with 2 dice than any other number. These revelations formed part of his handbook for gamblers. Cardano had suffered terribly because of his penchant for gambling (at times he pawned all his family's belongings, ended up in a poor house, and in fights). This book was his way of telling fellow gamblers how much they should bet and how to stay out of trouble.

In the 17th century, Fermat and Pascal collaborated and developed a more formalised theory of probability and numbers were assigned to probabilities. Pascal developed the idea of an expected value and famously used a probabilistic argument, Pascal's Wager, to justify his belief in God and his virtuous life.

Today there are sophisticated tests that can be performed on a sequence of numbers to determine whether or not the sequence is truly random, or if it has been determined by formula, human being, or some other means. For example does the number 7 occur one tenth of the time (plus or minus some allowable error)? Is the digit 1 followed by another 1 one tenth of the time?

An increasingly sophisticated series of tests can be fired into action. We have the "poker test", which analyses numbers in groups of 5, to see whether there are two pairs, three of a kind, etc, and compares the frequency of these patterns with those expected in a truly random distribution. The Chi Squared test is another statistician's favourite. Given that a particular pattern that has occurred, it will give a probability, and a confidence level, that it was generated by a random process.

But none of these tests are perfect. There are deterministic sequences that look random (pass all the tests) but are not. For example, the digits of the irrational number π look like a random sequence, and pass all the tests for randomness, but of course, it is not. π is a deterministic sequence of numbers - mathematicians can calculate it to as many decimal places as they please, given powerful enough computers.

Another naturally occurring, seemingly random distribution is that of the prime numbers. The Riemann Hypothesis provides a way to calculate the distribution of the primes, but it remains unsolved and nobody knows whether the hypothesis remains valid for very large values. However, like the digits in the irrational number π, the distribution of the primes does pass all the tests of randomness. It remains deterministic, but unpredictable.

Another useful measure of randomness is a statistic called the Kolmogorov Complexity, named after the 20th century Russian mathematician. The Kolmogorov Complexity is the shortest possible description of a sequence of numbers, for example the sequence 01010101.... could be described simply as "Repeat 01". This is a very short description, indicating the sequence is certainly not random.

However, for a truly random sequence, it would be impossible to describe the sequence of digits in any simplified form. The description would be just as long as the sequence itself, which indicates that the sequence would appear to be random.

During the last two centuries, scientists, mathematicians, economists and many others have begun to realise that sequences of random numbers are very important to their work. And so in the 19th century, methods were devised to generate random numbers. Dice, but can be biased. Walter Welden and his wife spent months at their kitchen table rolling a set of 12 dice over 26000 times, but these data were found to be flawed because of biases in the dice, which seems a terrible shame.

The first published collection of random numbers appears in a book of 1927 by Leonard HC Tippet. After that, there were many attempts, many flawed. One of the most successful methods was that used by John von Neumann, who pioneered the middle-square method, in which a 100-digit number is squared, the middle 100 digits are extracted from the result, and squared again, and so on. Very quickly, this process yields a set of digits that pass all the tests of randomness.

In the 1936 US presidential election, all the opinion polls pointed to a close result, with a possible win for the Republican Party's candidate Alf Landon. In the event, the outcome was a landslide to the Democratic Party's Franklin D Roosevelt. The opinion pollsters had chosen bad sampling techniques. In their attempts to be high-tech, they had telephoned people up to ask them about their voting intentions. In the 1930s, it was far more likely for wealthier people - largely Republican voters - to have a telephone, and so the results of the surveys were deeply biased. In surveys, truly randomising the sample population is of prime importance.

Likewise, it is also very important in medical tests. Choosing a biased sample set (e.g. too many women, too many young people, etc.) can make a drug appear more or less likely to work, biasing the experiment, with possibly dangerous consequences.

One thing is certain: humans are not very good at producing random sequences and they are not very good at spotting them either. When tested with two patterns of dots, a human being is particularly bad at deciding which pattern has been generated at random. Likewise, when trying to create a random sequence of numbers, very few people include features such as digits occurring three times in a row, which is a very prominent feature of random sequences.

But is there anything truly random? Going back to the dice we considered at the start, where a knowledge of the precise initial conditions would have allowed us to predict the outcome, surely this is true of any physical process creating a set of numbers.

Well, so far, atomic and quantum physics have come closest to providing us with truly unpredictable events. It is, to date, impossible to determine precisely when a radioactive material will decay. It seems random, but maybe we simply don't understand. At the moment, it remains probably the only way to generate truly random sequences.

Ernie, the UK Government's premium bond number generator, is now on its fourth reincarnation. It must be random, in order to give all the country's premium bond holders an equal chance of a prize. It contains a chip that exploits the thermal noise within itself, i.e. the amount of movement in the electrons. Government statisticians perform tests of the number sequences that this generates, and they do indeed pass the tests for randomness.

Other applications are: the random prime numbers used in internet transactions, encrypting your credit card number. The National Lottery machines use a set of very light balls and currents of air to mix them up, but like the dice, this could, in theory, be predicted.

Finally, the Met Office uses sets of random numbers for its ensemble forecasts. Sometimes it is difficult to predict the weather because of the well-known "chaos theory" - that the final state of the atmosphere is highly dependent on the precise initial conditions. It is impossible to measure the initial conditions to anything like the precision required, so atmospheric scientists feed their computer models various different scenarios, with the initial conditions varying slightly in each. This results in a set of different forecasts and a weather presenter who talks in percentage chances, rather than in certainties.

A Place in Florida - Maternity Ward For Whales


There's a place in Florida where endangered whales every winter give birth to their calves.

Having lived in San Diego, I knew whale-watching is a great winter pastime there, but I didn't know until recently that people in this place in Florida can watch whales, too.

The whales that give birth off Florida's east coast from the Georgia border southward maybe to Vero Beach are known as right whales. Like their human counterparts called 'snowbirds', they come south from their summer home to escape winter's cold around Massachusetts and Canada's Bay of Fundy. If it's a warm winter up north, they may not be seen south of St. Augustine.

Why are they called right whales? Hunters in centuries past thought they were the 'right whales' to hunt because this species moves slowly, travels close to shore and floats when dead. Nobody hunts right whales anymore. An international agreement stopped the hunting in 1935, and right whales were put on the Endangered Species list in 1973.

Why were whales hunted in the past? Two reasons: Blubber and baleen. Oil produced from blubber (fat) was used in lamps and as a lubricant. It also was used for margarine, lard and shortening. Right whales don't have teeth; they have baleen, a mustache-like material in their mouths. They trap food behind the baleen when expelling excess water. The flexible baleen once was used for buggy whips, umbrella stays, skirt hoops, strapping for beds, brushes and caning for chairs.

Today, only about 300 Northern Right Whales survive, and scientists fear that number may dwindle to 200 if things don't change. They're talking about the possibility of extinction in a couple of centuries. And some call the right whale the most endangered large mammal in the world.

While hunters are no longer a threat to the whales, ships are. Scientists say ships account for 30-50 per cent of whale deaths. In cooperation with the Navy and many other agencies, they have established an elaborate warning system when whales are calving in an attempt to prevent as many deaths as possible. Other causes of deaths include marine debris like plastics and fishermen's drift nets. The Daytona Beach Journal reports that 10-20 per cent of the whales in Florida come into contact with fishing equipment each year.

Starving doesn't seem to be a problem. Even though they weigh 60-100 tons, they fast on their 2,800-mile round-trip calving run from northern to southern waters, going without food for several months. Florida doesn't have the food they eat. In summer, each whale eats as many calories in one day as a human eats in eight months.

When the females are calving off Florida's coast, it's time for 'Dad's night out'. Only 30-50 pregnant whales come to Florida, and scientists have no idea where the males go during the winter. Maybe they don't like the idea of swimming 2,800 miles to see their offspring.

One good place in Florida to see right whales is Canaveral National Seashore. You'll need binoculars. But be aware that the odds are against seeing one. On average, only about a dozen of the 30-50 whales visiting Florida in the winter are seen by humans. If the weather is good, a day on the beach is a pleasant experience. (Mosquitoes are on a vacation then.)

If you're looking for a right whale, what do you look for? The whale probably will look as if it's floating on the surface - remember, the whale is not a speedy mammal. It's probably just resting. Look for a triangular tail, short flippers and lack of a dorsal fin. You may see a whale spout water through its double blow holes - a spout that looks like a V shape.

If you're lucky, you may be close enough to see a whale that has white patches of lice on its head, over its eyes and around its mouth. They all do. In the whale world, these are its 'fingerprints'; no two whales have the same patterns of lice (which don't hurt the whale).

Oh, and if you're looking for a whale spout, don't hold your breath. A right whale can hold its breath for up to 30 minutes.

"Use your aggressive feelings. Let the hate flow through you." Was coach Phil Jacksons advice for the big game last year and sure enough it seemed to work rather well.

Now you will have to vote and there are two ways to do so the first is to attend any basketball game this season as you will receive a ballot during half time and you can punch out the holes and chose a center forward, power forward, point guard, and shooting guard for your team.

Shaq has been the longest running center and player to be voted in each and every season since his rookie year. Even though he does not put up explosive numbers the fans love him and there fore seems to be worthy of a vote. Also Lebron James even though he is despised by the fans in Cleveland, Ohio certainly deserves a nod for his excellent performance thus far this season.

Also the all star rookie game will take place February 21st the Friday before the Sunday all star game. On that NBA weekend there will also be a slam dunk contest where the judges vote on a scale from 1-10 on the quality and unique attributes of the dunk.

Miami-Dade county which is also called Miami Dwayne Wade county will have their fair share of players in the game this year since Dwayne Wade, Lebron James, and Chris Bosch are all the best respective players in their positions for their given conference. It should be rather easy for them to gel and play together to give the eastern conference back their edge since this nba season has given them more than ample practice together.

The interesting question will be which head coach will get the job. Since Pat Riley is doing back office operations and Eddie Jordan got fired from the Washington Wizards last year this leaves the question open to who will lead the east to victory as Phil Jackson attempts to do the same for the west coast.
