National Eating Disorder Awareness Week started February 22nd and goes through February 28, 2009. March 1st sees the opening of the Women's Center for Healthy Living at Lakeview Health Systems in Jacksonville, Florida. This will help to publicize the seriousness of this disease and the general attitudes that prolong the suffering of those afflicted. Organizations all across the country will use this week as a platform to help the general public understand the affects produced by the behaviors of the sufferers. People must understand that eating disorders are not a life style choice but a serious sometimes fatal disease. What may appear to have started as a preoccupation with food or body image is undoubtedly centered in issues of self-esteem or physical or psychological abuse.
National Eating Disorder Awareness Week will be an annual event designed to highlight all arrears of concern associated with this disease. Eating Disorder agencies will make a concerted effort to better educate employers, medical workers and those in the education field. Education must not be limited to only symptoms and treatment but also to the lack of insurance coverage available to insure proper treatment. Changes have been mandated by congress but will not go into effect until 2010.
Eating Disorder Treatment facilities like the one opening in Jacksonville are capable of helping to cure this disease but it is up to the family and friends to identify and convince one suffering to admit themselves. With a combined effort we can educate those around us to the seriousness and plight of eating disorder sufferers.
